SALARY INCREASES FOR SHERIFF, CLERK SET AT RATE OF INFLATION
By a vote of 13 – 2 (Reps. Frank Proto and Dan Winch were opposed), the Board agreed to increase annual salaries for two elected positions based on inflation and an annual bonus. Starting in 2003, salaries for the offices of Sheriff and County Clerk will increase by 2.77 percent, plus $500 a year. The percentage is the average of the inflationary rate as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the years 1999-2001, the most recent full years for which the figures are available. Accordingly, the salary for the Sheriff, currently $65,699, will increase to $68,019 in 2003, $70,403 in 2004, $72,853 in 2005, and $75,371 in 2006. The salary for County Clerk, now set at $52,998, will go to $54,966 in 2003, $56,989 in 2004, $59,067 in 2005, and $61,203 in 2006. Contacts: Tim Joseph, Chair, Board of Representative, 274-5434, 277-2519; Michael Koplinka-Loehr, Chair, Government Operations Committee, 255-6668, 257-2329.

SALES TAX GIVES COUNTY BUDGET A BOOST
Final figures are not in yet, but Finance Director David Squires reported to the Board that he estimates a $1 million increase in sales tax revenues for the County in the second quarter of this year. Squires noted that sales tax revenues are higher than last year at this time and that even if receipts stay level with 2001 for the rest of the year, the County will be $900,000 to $1 million ahead of the amount it budgeted in its 2002 spending plan. Contacts: David Squires, Finance Director, 274-5544; Peter Penniman, Chair, Budget & Capital Committee, 387-5897.
